Epsom to London trains: 40 minutes, £2,920 a year

Epsom is one of the few commuter towns with three London terminals on the departure board. South Western Railway runs it to Waterloo in about 40 minutes. Southern runs it to Victoria in 44 and to London Bridge in 43. Nothing else in this part of Surrey gives you that choice, and it is the single biggest reason house prices here sit second in the county.

The catch is the ticket. The cheapest annual season out of Epsom is £2,676, and it locks you out of the fastest route. Everything below was checked against live National Rail timetables and Trainline season prices on 9 August 2026.

How long it actually takes

Here is the weekday morning as the timetable runs it, from the 07:00 departure board at Epsom.

Two things fall out of that. First, Waterloo is the reliable one: four departures in the peak hour, all of them between 40 and 42 minutes, no train materially faster or slower than the others. Second, the three terminals are within five minutes of each other, so the choice is about where you work rather than how long you sit.

Southern’s Victoria trains run via Sutton and Mitcham Junction and carry on south from Epsom to Leatherhead and Dorking. The London Bridge trains go via Sutton and West Croydon. South Western Railway’s Waterloo trains go via Wimbledon and carry on to Leatherhead, then either Guildford via Effingham Junction or Dorking.

The ticket that costs £244 less and takes you off the fast route

The cheapest one is the trap. Southern services only at £2,676 a year is what a booking site shows you first, and it is valid to Victoria and London Bridge and nowhere else. It is not valid on South Western Railway, which means it is not valid on the Waterloo trains, which are the fastest and the most frequent thing Epsom has. The £2,920 any-permitted-route season is £244 more and buys you all three terminals and any of the four peak-hour Waterloo departures.

If you work near Waterloo or Wimbledon, the £2,676 ticket is not a saving, it is a different product. If you work near Victoria or London Bridge and never need Waterloo, it genuinely is £244 a year.

Walk-up fares are the same whichever terminal you pick: £9.20 for an Anytime Day Single, £18.40 return and £28.60 for an Anytime Day Travelcard. Epsom is inside the contactless pay-as-you-go area, and a contactless tap prices at the same £9.20 as the paper single, so for occasional trips there is nothing to buy in advance.

Six stations, and the price of each

Epsom and Ewell has six railway stations inside one small borough, which is unusual, and the fare gradient between them is steeper than the geography suggests.

Annual prices are the any-permitted-route season to London Terminals, so they are comparing like with like.

The Epsom Downs line is the one that catches people. It is a branch, it terminates at Epsom Downs, and the direct Victoria service takes 1 hour 2 minutes, more than half an hour longer than Worcester Park for £784 a year more. Nobody moving to the borough for the commute should be looking at the Downs unless they intend to drive to Epsom or Sutton instead.

At the other end, Worcester Park is £1,188 a year cheaper than Epsom and ten minutes quicker, which is a real number when you are choosing between two houses four miles apart.

One oddity worth knowing: an Epsom walk-up single is £9.20, while Ewell West and Ewell East, both closer to London, are £9.40. Epsom’s fare is pinned down by competition between the two operators serving it. The season ticket runs the other way, because Epsom’s covers a wider route.

Driving to the station

This is where Epsom is genuinely awkward. The station car park run by APCOA at Epsom has 17 spaces, including two for motorbikes and two for Blue Badge holders, and a quarterly ticket costs £316.60. That is not a commuter car park, it is a handful of bays. Blue Badge holders park free.

Almost everyone driving to the train uses a council car park instead. The nearest large ones are Hook Road multi-storey, 530 spaces, and the Ashley Centre multi-storey, 649 spaces, both at £8 for the day. Hook Road has been permit or RingGo only since 1 April 2025, so the old barrier cards and tokens no longer work.

Epsom Downs station changed to paid parking on 30 March 2026. Its 17 spaces now cost £5.50 for a weekday, £3.00 at weekends and £23.65 for a week, with a 15p fee on top of each tariff. Blue Badge holders park free after registering through the APCOA portal.
